Somewhere in my CD collection is an ambient sound recording of thunderstorms. Storms with heavy rain, distant and nearby thunder claps, the fractal pinging of raindrops on tin roofs, and the rush of water cutting through the air. It reminds me of my innocent youth  standing on front porches of country homes with tin roofs and giant oaks. It soothes me.

Well, the sounds used to sooth me. I’ve lost that joy for those sounds. Now they frighten me.

All I can think of is my data. Are my UPS systems working and fully charged? What data has yet to be backed up to all the archive drives? Who do I need to call to make sure everything is safe?

Although the chances of being struck by lightning are rather low, all it takes is one hit and you’re probably a goner. I’ve never suddenly run into the storm to stand under an oak tree to watch the storm. Even the most innocent youth knew enough to avoid the obvious danger.

Today I park myself safely under a structure, without a tin roof, to observe and enjoy the power of nature.

And, I work to make sure my data is not longer in danger by youthful innocence.
